Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and dual diagnoses. Located in Highland, NY, this position is responsible for preventing and responding to students in crisis. The Behavior Specialist (Crisis Support) will provide crisis intervention and other assistance as needed to maintain safety and program integrity. They will provide support to students who need a higher level of care to participate in instruction as needed, and assist in implementation of skill acquisition and behavior support plans as directed. Under the direction of the classroom teacher, they will assist in training other staff in implementation. The Behavior Specialist (Crisis Support) will administer and implement behavior improvement programs recommended by administration and appraise the effectiveness of the program in meeting the students’ needs. In addition, they will advise staff on possible causes of student’s behavior and suggest methods of teaching alternative skills or modifying the environment.
Salary: (commensurate with education and experience)
With HS Diploma/GED: $21.50 - $23.00 per hour
With BA/BS: $22.50 - $24.07 per hour
With MA/MS or higher: $23.50 - $25.14 per hour

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in education, psychology, human services or related field OR at least one year’s experience working with individuals with autism and/or severe behavioral concerns
EXPERIENCE: At least one year’s experience with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, inhalants or other chemical or controlled substances. Significant, prolonged and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending and lifting of 50 pounds or more. Using standard crisis intervention procedures, must be able to singlehandedly effect the initial restraint of children and adolescents. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
